However, given that fact, I believe it is possible to still appreciate the fact that these stories have a massive influence on modern horror.
That all being said, the main story in this volume seemed more overtly racist then most, so this one was harder to enjoy. The world-building was cool though. Highly descriptive. I swear I smelled a fishy odor while reading it The audio was done in an appropriately horror-ly manner. June from his work as the narrator of the computer game Darkest Dungeon , and he is equally excellent in this performance. Highly recommended for my friends who love ol' H. I'd probably start on volume five with "The Haunter of the Dark" and if that catches your interest, move on to others.
This particular volume is just "Dagon", a very short, somewhat unremarkable story that is mostly just an exploration of an interesting setting, and "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" which is very good and literally made me gasp at one point, but still probably isn't his best. The Shadow over Innsmouth is my favourite Lovecraft work, hands down. So far, anyway. It paints a beautiful but grim picture of a quaint New England seaside town with terrible secrets.

As far as I know, I have not descended from underwater gods introduced to North America from South Seas islands by merchant traders, but I have also not exhausted my personal research either.

It was creepy. Dagon was passable through a bit short in terms of story. I liked but it definitely felt like a repeat of a lot of visual motifs he did much better in his other works.

This second one was better than the first, in my opinion. Yet, still, the age shows. I learned some about writing by listening to parts of this intently, and Lovecraft was clearly WAY ahead of his time in his ability to capture human emotion. There are more engaging stories out there, yet I still recommend this for those who want to experience a broad spectrum of styles and learn how to word things yourself.

Likewise, the Innsmouth natives don't like strangers, so when the narrator takes a trip to Innsmouth to tour the city things go horribly awry. It is much shorter and features the narrative of a shipwrecked victim. He recounts the horrors he saw and his trip into a damaged psyche is evident with each passing paragraph. The end of this story came abruptly, but it was shocking. It seems like Lovecraft requires patience and a dictionary to enjoy the story's he tells.
These two progress at an intentional pace that keeps the reader dangerously close to boredom, but somehow never crossing that line. Finally, the reader of this Audio CD was fantastic. His voice was smooth and easy and deep, befitting of the setting.
Furthermore, his reading helped propel the story into horror and really drive in the terror that lurks in Innsmouth, especially when the old man is telling his story. A young traveler inadvertently comes across the strange town of Innsmouth, that most of the neighboring townspeople seem eager to avoid.
Cynical and anti-superstitious from the beginning, the narrator decides that he'll pop in for a quick visit and entertain himself with the wild tales of its inhabitants. But when he is forced to stay over night, he discovers that there may actually be something to fear in Innsmouth, and there are beings under the ocean that we can't even begin to imagine.
Dagon was a rather forgettable story. An old sailor commits suicide after being tormented by memories of a strange encounter in the middle of the ocean. It's a bit surprising that I haven't yet read an H. Lovecraft story that I didn't like. All that I've read so far were were either good, great, or incredible. This volume contains one good story and one great one. It makes a lot of sense to see these two stories paired up. Dagon is a good, albeit brief, little story about a man who becomes marooned on a newly-formed island, only to discover something terrifying there.
If you read Dagon first, it works as a kind of ominous prelude to The Shadow It's a bit surprising that I haven't yet read an H. No Lovecraft story that I've read has yet matched up to At the Mountains of Madness , but Shadow certainly struck me as being one of the best that I've read so far even in spite of Lovecraft's distracting overuse of the word "furtive".
